A lesson about Counterfeit Coins

Well for today's post lets talk about counterfeit and phony coins.  Now that the coin market is picking up pace and more people are buying rare coins for their collection or for investing, it is probably wise to be somewhat knowledgeable about if a coin is real or not.  I myself have met people who have failed to pawn off a fake coin to me.  Of course I can't say how many times I've heard that sad tale of a deal gone south because the coin wasn't really a coin after all.  So with that said  I would like to start with a little snippet from PCGS. "Since perhaps the very day coins were first produced, quick-buck artists and their counterparts throughout history have sought illicit gain by making copies-or counterfeits-of the genuine articles".
OK.  Now that you've seen the beginning, I suggest that you take some time and read the rest of this article.  If you don't have the time, bookmark it for a later.  You will come away with a little more ease of mind and understanding about these types of coins that leave a sour taste in  ones mouth.

Have a nice read

1992 D Lincoln Memorial Cents

I read an interesting article today about 2 different reverses on some of the 1992- 2000 Lincoln Memorial Penny.  In 1992 the Philadelphia and Denver Mints used 2 distinct reverse types.  One with the AM in AMERICA being close together and the FG (Frank Gasparro's) initials being far from the Memorial and the other version has a greater distance between the AM and the initials are closer to the Memorial.  The closer AM is the rarer of the 1992-D cents.  Heritage Auctions estimates that there is only 15 of the rare pennies that are currently known, but more may come to light.  A MS69 Red Lincoln that was graded by PCGS sold for $14,100 at a Heritage auction on Feb 17 2014.

So before you give your little one that penny for the gum machine or throwing it in a penny tray at your local store, you may want to take a closer look.  There might be a Lincoln in your hand that will bring a lot of cents into your pocket.

Australia Map Shaped Coin Series – Koala 2014 1oz Silver Coin

While I was out looking for a topic for today I came across this unusual coin. It's minted by our friends in Australia and to my surprise it is legal tender. Now I've got to admit it, it is a unique item. The price is twice over the value of an ounce of silver at today's prices, but the limited number of these type of coins makes it an item that could become "a must have" for the collectibles and numismatic collectors down the road. Just how much will depend on the number of survivors and if silver goes up a little and holds.
Even though I might think it's a little pricey, I like it. Not to many map shape coins in my collection and I'm going to have to mull it over about buying one. If you're curious, just click on the link below and it'll take you to Perth Mint.

Who Collects Coins?

How often do you hear that coin collecting is for nerds or geeks?  No one important or cool would admit they collect coins!  We know it's not true though.  In fact many collectors come from many places, have different faces and live different lifestyles.  So with that in mind we look to a fellow collector that many would have never thought of.
